Mediterranean cuisine is known for its healthy ingredients, bold flavors, and delicious spices. It's no wonder that Mediterranean pizza has become a popular choice among foodies around the world.
If you're looking for a pizza recipe that's a little different from the norm, then you'll definitely want to try out this Mediterranean pizza recipe. The combination of fresh spinach, tangy feta cheese, and briny olives is sure to please everyone.
Mediterranean Pizza Toppings
One of the defining characteristics of Mediterranean pizza is its use of fresh, flavorful ingredients. Here are the key ingredients to get those Mediterranean flavors:
- Tomato Sauce: Use any type of red sauce or crushed tomatoes. I love using the Rao’s brand tomato sauce for a pizza sauce. It is a little more expensive but so worth it! If you like a little spice I would go for their Arriabatta sauce.
- Spinach: Before adding to your pizza, roughly chop the fresh spinach. The smaller sizes make it much easier to eat.
- Artichokes: You can find canned or jarred artichokes. I love using marinated artichokes on pizza. Just give them a rough chop before adding them to the pizza.
- Olives: Kalamata olives work great on pizza, but use which ever ones you prefer.
- Feta & Mozzarella Cheese: This recipe calls for a blend of feta and mozzarella. Feel free to swap out the amounts or use different cheese all together. If you don't like feta, you could also use goat cheese.
Some topping variations you could use are red peppers, red onion, sun-dried tomatoes, cherry tomatoes or fresh basil. You can even top the pizza with a little drizzle of olive oil or parmesan cheese.
How to Cook the Pizza Crust
You can use homemade dough or pre-made pizza crust for this recipe. When making my own dough this pizza dough, this is a great recipe: The Best Pizza Dough. There are 2 ways you can cook your pizza. You can place your dough on to a pizza pan, then top with your ingredients, and put into the oven.
The other option is using a pizza peel and launching your pizza into the oven. To cook the pizza on a pizza steel, preheat your oven to the highest temperature. Place the pizza steel or pizza stone on the top rack of your oven and let it heat up for at least 45 minutes. Stretch your pizza dough and place it on a floured pizza peel (I’ve also used cornmeal to keep it form sticking). Add the toppings of your choice. Use a gentle shaking motion to transfer the pizza onto the pizza steel. Bake the pizza on the steel until the crust is golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
Use any kind of pizza dough that you like. I use a Neapolitan style dough, but if you prefer thin crust or flatbread, use can use that as well.
Can I make this pizza in a pizza oven?
Yes! If you have a pizza oven or something like the Ooni, you can definitely use that instead of baking it in the oven. You can use the same toppings and just cook your pizza like you normally would with the type of pizza oven you have. We have the Ooni pizza oven and I've made this pizza with that, and it turned out amazing!
How to store leftover pizza
If you can leftover pizza you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in the oven for 5-10 minutes or 1-2 minutes in the microwave. You can also enjoy cold or room temperature if that is your jam.
What to Serve with Pizza
You can always serve pizza on it’s own, but if you want a side salad to go with it, here are a few of my favorites.
