Jump to RecipeBuckwheat waffles topped with yogurt and strawberries.

Buckwheat flour is a great alternative to use when making pancakes. It is a great source of fiber and protein so you can enjoy your sweet morning treat without the guilt.

Depending on the waffle iron you use, this recipe can make anywhere from 3-6 waffles.

What type of waffle iron do I need for this recipe?

You can use any type of waffle iron, but the amount you get from it may vary. I have this Cuisinart Waffle maker and it makes 6 waffles. If you have a square one or a waffle maker that makes thicker waffles you might get a few less.

Are buckwheat waffles gluten-free?

Yes! Buckwheat is naturally gluten-free so these pancakes are completely gluten-free.

How to make buckwheat waffles vegan?

These buckwheat waffles are not vegan but they can easily be made vegan. Use plant-based milk, swap out the butter for vegetable oil, and use a flax egg instead of a regular egg.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup buckwheat flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 + 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 + 1/4 cups milk
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon). Then add in the milk, butter, and egg. Whisk until combined.
  2. Heat your waffle maker accordingly. Once heated, use a ladle to scoop the batter into the waffle maker. (Depending on your waffle maker size, you might need anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 cup of batter.)
  3. Close the waffle iron and cook until desired crispiness.
  4. Serve with syrup, fruit, yogurt, or whipped cream.
