Tofu tacos are a quick weeknight meal that is great to have in a pinch. They are packed with protein and flavor. Plus, crisping the tacos brings the flavors up a notch to make something extra delicious.
Growing up, we made simple ground beef tacos quite often. This is my vegetarian version of those classic tacos.
How to Make Tofu Taco Meat
Making tofu taco meat is actually fairly simple. Here are the 3 main steps for making tofu taco meat.
- Crumble up the tofu into small pieces.
- Toss the crumbles with olive oil and seasoning.
- Bake the tofu mixture at 350°F for 25-30 minutes.
Why I Love This Recipe
- You can use a seasoning packet. There is no need to measure out your seasonings or buy a bunch of different spices. Just buy a single taco seasoning packet, and you're ready to go!
- Easy weeknight meal. The tofu does take a little bit to bake, but this recipe is very easy to put together. You can quickly assemble everything and throw it in the oven in no time! This is a great easy dinner for a high protein vegetarian meal.
- Easy to change up. You can easily swap out or add in new topping as needed. I love to use up whatever I have on hand that week. Sometimes I will add in some fresh tomato or cilantro.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Taco Seasoning. This recipe calls for one taco seasoning packet. One of many favorites is the Siete Mild or Spicy Seasoning Packet. They are super easy to find, and you can choose based on your spice level preference. I also love the Spice House Seasoning Mixes for something a little more unique!
- Cheese. This recipe calls for some type of Mexican cheese. I have made these with a shredded Mexican blend and with Oaxaca cheese. Both seem to work great, so choose based on your preference and availability. If you want these to be vegan tofu tacos just use a vegan cheese in substitution.
- Tortillas. This recipe calls for 6-inch flour tortillas, but you could also use smaller 4-inch tortillas for a street taco size. You could also use corn tortillas instead; they just won't crisp up as nicely as the flour tortillas.
Tips for the Best Tofu Tacos
- Use Super Firm Tofu. Try to find the most firm tofu you can. I can sometimes find super firm tofu, but if not, extra firm will do. The harder the tofu, the easier it is to get that nice crispy flavor. The super firm tofu crumbles also hold their shape really well.
- Make sure to have a dipping sauce. Make sure to get a good amount of mashed avocado or salsa on each bite!
- Don't overcook the tofu. You want to cook it enough to get some nice crispy bits, but if you overcook the tofu, it will dry out a little too much and not have that nice bite to it.
What to Serve with Tofu Tacos
This is a great recipe on its own, but if you're looking to add something else to the meal, you could easily serve it with tortilla chips and guacamole or a side of black bean soup.
