I have recently been getting into using halloumi cheese in my recipes. It’s such a fun versatile cheese to add to the mix. With this halloumi toast recipe, I wanted something flavorful and filling while still having some brightness to the meal.
This halloumi avocado toast makes for the perfect breakfast, lunch, or snack. The recipe is for a single halloumi toast but feel free to double or triple the recipe depending on who you are cooking for.
What does halloumi taste like?
Halloumi is a semi-hard cheese that is a mix of different types of milk. It has a fairly mild and salty flavor to it. It almost reminds me of a harder mozzarella. Since the texture is a little chewy it holds its shape well which makes it perfect for grilling.
Where to find halloumi?
Depending on where you live halloumi isn’t always the easiest cheese to find. Most larger grocery stores or specialty stores will carry it. It is typically in the specialty cheese section near a deli. I have always been able to find it at Whole Foods or Fresh Thyme grocery stores.
It comes in a large block. It does seem to be fairly expensive but remember you only need a few slices for each serving so it goes a long way.
Tips for the Best Halloumi Toast
- Toast the bread on the stove. You can use a toaster to toast your bread but if you want it extra crispy, add a little olive oil or butter and toast each side of it on a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Cut the halloumi fairly thin. You want a good amount of halloumi but since you are stacking it with other toppings try to get fairly thin slices. I like to go for around a 1/4” thickness.
- Place most ingredients under the halloumi. When making halloumi toast I like to place the avocado, arugula, and sun-dried tomatoes under the halloumi. That way the cheese helps hold everything together when you go to eat it.
Other Halloumi Toast Toppings
There are so many different ways to make halloumi toast. These are some of my favorite toppings but you can easily swap them out or add additional flavors if you want. To top the halloumi toast you could add some chili flakes or lemon juice for an extra punch of flavor. If you have fresh herbs, chop up some fresh basil or parsley to throw on top. If you are looking for some added protein, you could even add a soft-boiled egg to your toast. Feel free to mix it up and use whatever your favorite flavors are.
